How to get a student visa from Kurdistan for a university abroad

How to get a student visa from Kurdistan for a university abroad

Every year thousands of students from Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok and Halabja win places at universities abroad, and every year avoidable mistakes cost some of them the visa. This is the complete, current playbook for going from a Kurdistan address to a student visa in hand, no agent required.

The order matters more than anything. A student visa is the last step, not the first. You cannot apply for one until a university has formally admitted you and issued the enrolment document your embassy asks for. Everything below is arranged in the sequence you should actually do it.

Admission first, visa last. The enrolment letter from your university is what unlocks the visa appointment.

Step 1 — Get admitted and get the enrolment document

Apply to your universities directly through their own portals. Once you accept an offer and (where required) pay a deposit, the university issues the single document your visa depends on. Its name changes by country:

university-portal / admissions

Enrolment document by country

  • United States — Form I-20 (after paying the SEVIS I-901 fee)
  • United Kingdom — CAS number (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
  • Germany — Zulassungsbescheid (admission letter) + blocked account
  • Turkey — Kabul Mektubu (acceptance letter) + student residence path
  • Canada — Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution

Step 2 — Prove you can pay

Every consulate wants evidence that your tuition and living costs are covered. This is where most Kurdistan applications are refused, so treat it seriously. Bank statements should be in the sponsor's name, recent, and show a stable balance, not a lump sum that appeared last week.

Money that arrives in one big deposit days before you apply is the single most common red flag. Build the balance over months, and keep proof of where it came from (salary, property sale, family business).

Step 3 — Assemble the file

The document file: passport, admission letter, financial proof, photos and the visa form printout.

Core documents every embassy expects

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your travel date
  • University enrolment document (I-20 / CAS / Zulassung ...)
  • Proof of funds (bank statements, sponsor letter, scholarship award)
  • Academic transcripts and diploma, translated and attested
  • Language test (IELTS / TOEFL / TestDaF) where required
  • Passport photos to the exact embassy spec
  • Proof of ties to Kurdistan (property, family, employment)

Step 4 — Pay the fees and book online

You complete an online form and pay before you ever see an officer. Keep every confirmation page. The two you must not lose are the SEVIS fee receipt (US) and the visa application form confirmation with its barcode.

Step 5 — The interview

Not every country interviews, but the US does, and it is short: two to four minutes. The officer is deciding one thing, whether you are a genuine student who will return. Answer in your own words, be specific about your program and your plan after graduation, and never memorise a script.

  1. Book the earliest slot you canSummer queues at the nearest consulate fill fast; apply as soon as you have your enrolment document.
  2. Bring the whole file, organisedPassport, enrolment document, funds, transcripts, fee receipts, photos, in one folder you can hand over instantly.
  3. Speak plainly and honestlyKnow your course, your city, your costs and why this university. Contradicting your own documents is fatal.
  4. Show your reason to come backFamily, property or a job waiting in Kurdistan answers the officer’s real question.

Where Kurdistan students actually apply

There is no US embassy issuing student visas inside the Kurdistan Region, so most applicants travel to a consulate that serves them, often in a neighbouring country, or to Baghdad. Confirm the correct post for your nationality and passport before you book anything, and budget for that trip.

Typical cost (USD)Amount
SEVIS I-901 fee (US, F-1)$350
US visa (MRV) fee$185
UK student visa + health surcharge$1,000+
Germany national visa~$85
Language test (IELTS/TOEFL)$200 - $250
Document translation & attestation$50 - $200
With the visa in your passport, the last step is the easy one.

The five mistakes that sink applications

1. Applying before you hold the enrolment document. 2. Funds that appear suddenly. 3. A passport about to expire. 4. Documents that contradict each other, names, dates, amounts. 5. Leaving it to the last month before term. Start the whole process at least four to six months before your course begins.

Kurdify does not sell visa services and never asks for your passport. This guide is free. If an agency guarantees a visa for a fee, walk away, no one can guarantee a consular decision.
